Bill has had several occupations, from repairing mechanical adding machines for Remington Rand, construction laborer, Realtor, appraiser, and mortgage loan officer. Those last three led to several management positions over 33 years with Mishawaka Federal Savings. Like most pocket - watch people he has met, his interest began when he was given his grandfather’s non-working Waltham pocket watch about 40 years ago. However, even though he bought, sold, and collected various brands over several years AND lived his whole life in the county, he had never heard of the South Bend Watch Co. He saw his first South Bend watch maybe 25 years ago and decided to learn more. When researching the company, Bill discovered that barely any official records existed. It seems that they were deliberately destroyed. Over the years, many individuals and groups have researched and pieced together information about the company, its people, and its products. As a result, he was able to put together a presentation that is as accurate as possible, covers a brief explanation of the evolution of the need for precise timekeeping, a little about watch terminology, the critical part played by railroad needs, how the company began, its products, people, successes and ultimate failures.
